What Are You Looking At?
When your looking at life and trying to figure things out, the results will be mainly dependent on your perspective in life. Having a good perspective in a situation can make all the difference. It will affect the way you look at things, how you value your circumstances, and the way you go about making decisions. When it comes down to it, perspective is everything.
Bare Essentials
For example, when was the last time that you were excited when you bought an ice cube tray? Probably never. For me it was just the other day. Some back story might help with this one. So I have recently graduated college, got a job, and moved into a new apartment. I decided to try and move everything in as few trips as possible and pack my car with as many of my belongings that would possibly fit in my four door car.
I have been living off the not so bad bare essentials of a bed, dresser and table for the past week. All while I wait to move more of my belongings to my new apartment. This means I do not currently have a couch or chair to sit on when I watch my TV. Which is currently on the floor in my living room. It really is not that bad, but who doesn’t enjoy a good couch?
Back to the ice cube tray. As I wait to cash my first check from my first “real” job. My penny pinching skills have been in full force and I have been trying to buy just the things to get me by. So in the quest to solve the issue of drinking the warm water that comes out of my faucet. I figured that ice is a solid, pun intended, time tested solution which would solve my problem.
Value Is Found In Perspective
With my frugality in full swing I traveled to the store in search of the answer to my luke warm liquid problem. As I made my way down the aisle and looked at the beautifully low price of $1.49, which was displayed next the high quality plastic water freezing container. I was simply happy. I imagine that most people do not get excited at all about buying a simple ice cube tray, but that day I did.
It doesn’t matter the situation, if it is buying a house or buying toilet paper. Our perspective can simply change everything. If we choose to have a negative perspective, then we can miss out on all the little things in life that might actually be quite enjoyable. We miss out on the bigger things in life that we should truly be thankful for. As most of us know, there are those in the world who don’t even have running water, let alone ice cubes. Since we live in a consumer age, a lot of life’s situations include “things”. We can get caught up in living all about things and what we don’t have, and forget about what we really do have.
It’s Your Choice To See It
If a negative perspective is sneaking up on you, then think about the things in life that just seem to always make you a little happier. It is most likely not your bank account, wardrobe, or an ice cube tray. It may be spending time with family, enjoying a laugh with friends, watching the sunset on a lake, or just simply remembering that your heart just keeps on beating.
Our attitude can be really negative when we choose to focus on things about our life that seem to be lacking in some area. When reality would show them to be no bad at all. Look to the simple things in life to try and improve your perspective when life just seems to be a little bit gloomy. You just might find that sitting on your living room floor and drinking a nice cold glass of water isn’t so bad after all.
Fun Fact: The first rubber ice cube tray was invented by Lloyd Groff Copema in 1933
